The history of the city of Chashniki goes back more than five centuries. They were first mentioned in 1504 in the list of the largest settlements of the Polotsk Voivodeship of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Chashniki belonged to the princes Lukomsky, Kishki, Sapieha, Potocki, Volodkovich. The status of the city was assigned in 1966. The quantitative composition of the population and the level of socio-economic development played a decisive role in this.
One of the versions of the origin of the name of the city is that it is located in a low place, as if in a "bowl".
Based on another point of view, pottery was developed in Chashnichchina, various kinds of household utensils were made - bowls, jugs, cups, which, perhaps, served as the basis for such a name.
The third assumption is associated with the word "chashnik" - this is the position and rank in the economy of Russian tsars and princes. "Chashniki" were engaged in beekeeping, mead making, and it was here that they were real experts in their field.
In historical documents, Chashniki is mentioned as having a convenient location and therefore a rapidly developing settlement. Located on the way "from the Varangians to the Greeks" the place attracted merchants. And in 1797, the construction of the Berezinsky water system began. This could not but have an impact on the local residents, who, hired by the local merchant Gurevich, rafted the forest along the Ulla River, which brought good earnings. Work on the construction of the canal lasted about eight years, and the path by water made it possible to connect the rivers of the Black and Baltic Sea basins. This was of key importance for the socio-economic development of the town, since it was from Chashnik that the Ulla River was navigable. The Chashniki Canal was one of the five and had a length of 1214 m. With the beginning of the operation of the canal, the delivery time of timber, which until then was about two years, was significantly reduced. The Berezina water system not only floated timber to Riga, but also sent grain, alcohol, transported livestock, flax, hemp, wax, honey and other goods for sale.
Chashniki land has given many glorious names. Famous countrymen left their bright mark on history.
Among them are Vasily Tyapinsky, a well-known Belarusian educator and public figure, Yanka Zhurba, a Belarusian poet, teacher, translator, Grigory Reles, a poet and writer, Yegor Battalionok is an artist, a member of the Union of Artists of Belarus, Ales Shashkov is a Belarusian writer, Dmitry Polityko is a candidate of philological sciences, a poet, a critic, Gennady Pashkov is a poet, Boris Dolgoplosk is a scientist in the field of polymer chemistry, corresponding member of the USSR Academy of Sciences, Olga Demkina is an artist, whose work has earned international recognition.
